Apple iPad – Are you buying?

At today’s highly-anticipated media event, Apple finally announced the tablet device they’ve been working for years and years, the Apple iPad, featuring a 9.7′ LED-backlit, IPS display (in-plane switching) with resolution of 1024 x 768 plus flash storage of 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB It should be no surprised to anyone that the iPad’s day has come, even though one could expect more or less!

Hardware
iPad equipped with a custom-designed yet low-power 1 GHz “Apple A4″ chip which gives very fast performance (reviewed by Gizmodo). It weighs in at 1.5 pounds and is 0.5-inch thin (slightly thicker than iPhone 3GS). First hands-on by Engadget and Gizmodo said: it’s lightweight, it’s thin, and it’s beautiful. The screen is crisp and gorgeous, feels like a giant iPhone

In terms of standard connectivity, the iPad offers Wi-Fi (802.11n) and Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, with 3G models also offering cellular data connectivity. All iPad models have an accelerometer, compass, speakers, a microphone, and a 30-pin dock connector. No USB, no camrea, no HDMI, no DVI, not even a Mini DisplayPort The iPad also offers a claimed 10 hours of battery life for viewing video, with 1 month of standby battery life.

Software
The iPad runs iPhone OS 3.2 with built-in standard apps for personal information management, including Address Book, Calendar, E-mail, Safari, Google Maps, and Notes. A special version of iTunes and iWork are on board to provide an optimized experience on the device’s 9.7-inch screen. Apple also unveiled new app called iBooks featuring a 3D virtual bookshelf with a user’s personal collection. It will contains a link to the iBookstore which allows users to purchase and download books from a variety of publishers.

Other apps can be brought from Apple Online Store, just like how you download and sync for iPhone before.

Note: there will be no multitasking at all, which mean no video streaming while you are working on iPad. No Flash too. And the iBooks app might work only in the US

Pricing
Depends on model and capacity, the iPad starts from $ 499. Models with 3G will be unlocked and will be able to use GSM micro SIMs. In the U.S., AT&T will offer two data plan options – $14.99 for up to 250MB/month and $29.99/month for unlimited data. No contract is required for either option, and free access to AT&T’s Wi-Fi hot spots is included. Data packages for iPad users outside of the U.S. will by in place by June.

Accessories include dock, case, connection kits:

The iPad first edition is obviously neither a netbook killer nor a tablet for work, you are likely buying a big iPod Touch + Kindle indeed. It’s not a wow for me too. The next revision might have multitasking, but it’s yet to come. Personally I would feel my eyes now are on the 32Gb Wifi iPad ^^ Whether Steve’s true about ‘the most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price‘ or not, we need to wait till late March for worldwide availability to confirm

Nice read. I also saw a video in youtube about a review on new Apple iPad. Here is the link – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAb_yg2XF-k

  • The ipad is totally silly. I can’t see myself putting down $400 to $600 to get a machine which will not do most of the things that my laptop could. I ordinarily like Apple, specifically the apple iphone. It’s just this is a bit too much. I wish them well nevertheless I will not be getting one anytime soon.

  • Please bring us a review on the iPad I will be waiting.

Very detailed hands-on with Apple iPad from AppleInsider ^^

  • YILKA says:

Steve said today at the Town Hall Meeting: On Google: ‘We did not enter the search business. They entered the phone business. Make no mistake they want to kill the iPhone. We won’t let them’

And for Flash: ‘Apple does not support Flash because it is so buggy, whenever a Mac crashes more often than not its because of Flash. No one will be using Flash. The world is moving to HTML5!’

So may it be the last for Flash, there will be no Flash on iPhone/iPad etc, we’re moving on ^^

Is there a difference between apple iPad 3g and the iPad Wifi?

  • Hi, I read all your posts, keep them coming.

  • YILKA says:

From early reviews on iPad, it’s clearly a winner ^^

David Pogue / New York Times: If you’re a techie, Pogue says that a laptop will do more for less money. But, if you like the concept of the iPad, “you’ll love the machine”. Pogue did test the iPad’s battery life and found it could play movies continuously for over 12 hours.

Walt Mossberg / All Things D: “a whole new type of computer”. Impressed by the battery life which was longer than Apple’s 10 hour claim.

Edward Baig / USA Today: “The first iPad is a winner.” “Apple has pretty much nailed it with this first iPad, though there’s certainly room for improvement.”

Andy Inhatko / Chicago Sun Times: “The iPad user experience is instantly compelling and elegant.” “It feels more as if the iPad is filling a gap that’s existed for quite some time.”

Can’t wait to have one for me

  • I am unable to hold back until the actual ipad is otherwise engaged in the united kingdom, i’ve come across several reviews online through Us customers and yes it appears amazing. I’ve come across some incredible accessories ^ just about to happen also! ipad PWNS!

iPad is believed to hit Singapore market by mid May 2010, starting from 729 S$ for 16Gb Wifi model …

    Read more here: http://www.angryangmo.com/2010/01/28/complete-ipad-guide-singapore/

Not sure how solid the source is, but 729 S$ is definitely acceptable, just hope the time could be sooner, say end of April 2010 ^^

  • aiman says:

I think IPad will not reach Singapore that soon… maybe end of the year or early next year… this is totally sux!

  • i will buying after i got money from my mother

  • YILKA says:

Pretty much disappointed to those whom love Microsoft and HP. Today April 30th, Microsoft announced that they cancel the project ‘Courier’ – the tablet device they previously referred to as ‘iPad killer’

And the show goes on. HP surprisingly killed the HP Slate project; blaming Windows 7 is not a real WebOS, plus the company now focuses on the new device after acquiring Palm. So one more ‘iPad killer’ device is gone …

I would say they are smart not even try, may they learnt something after touched the iPad and now go back to the design room

Just one more thing, Apple iPad Wifi + 3G goes on sale, today in the US ^^

  • YILKA says:

    Apple announced that:

    - The iPad will go on sale in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and Britain. Pre-ordering for those markets will start on May 10.

    - Then it will expand to Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore in July.

Guess Singapore needs to wait a little longer …

  • L2Leo says:

@Yilka: I’m not much of a tech person, so it’s not gonna please you, but after my hands-on with iPad 2 days back, the only apps I loved were the iBook and games
