My site previously was developed using iWeb but I found it’s a pain in the a$$ when trying to integrate new features into it since iWeb code is pure HTML-based. So I decided to change my taste, try new things and see how it works out.
There are several choices out there available as free open-sourced if you need a flexible blogging system. I just name a few: WordPress, Joomla!, Movable Type, Blogger, Yahoo 360.
For me, I personally hate Yahoo 360 most but it doesn’t matter here (even I have my own 360 Page – never got updated
); and I finally arrived at WordPress, that’s all it takes to re-master my own weblog.
Installation
The famous 5-min installation of WordPress surprised me, 5 minutes is more than enough providing that your own web hosting already gave you mySQL pre-installed which I think almost all of them did. My Singhost does it
. Just blindly follow the instruction, and your own weblog will be up and running without a hitch. What will you have? Nothing! Yeap, I mean it, you have nothing. It’s just a very simple weblog, zero content, basic look-n-feel. The rest will be your jobs.
Software I used
1 – For Searching:
I use Inquisitor 3, a great plugin for Safari, that’s how it looks:

2 – For Editing:
You should have a software can help you to edit .js and .php file with FTP support as well. I use BBEdit which can edit files directly on the FTP server, very convenient and powerful. For Windows, I recommend PSPad – the best software I found so far, it’s free, light, and fast, also equipped with FTP access.
Here is how BBEdit looks, it may not look attractive; in fact, it doesn’t need to; but it does the job well

3 – For CSS Files
You probably know what is CSS when come to web design already, almost all the websites now rely heavily on CSS to customize the display, and my site is not an exception. I used CSSEdit 2 as the very effective tool to handle CSS stuff. You can check out there website for further details.

4 – For Uploading/Downloading Files
Yes, of course. We are talking about working with FTP Server. It has more than thousand choices of FTP software as far as I know. Personally I use CyberDuck to do those tasks, CyberDuck is free anyway

CyberDuck also allow you to open/edit files on the server but I’m not comfortable with it compares to BBEdit
5 – For Color Customization
It’s deadly important to know how color works together on the front-end of your website, which color match with each other and how can they all contribute to your nicely-look site. For me, I use Color Scheme Studio; trust me, it will blow your mind while you need to handle color. It helps you to create a match, find correct pattern, pick-up screen color, find complement color, .. etc; a new world for you to explore ![]()

By the way, it has both Mac and Windows version.
That’s all for now. I will continue next time with WordPress plugins and tips
.
Oops, I almost forgot, this how my old website looks:

The current site is just what you are seeing.
good job
