Best on the Web 2006

The new year is coming, just one more week to go before we celebrate 2007 . I want to write my end year article to sum up those goodies I found that could be Best on the Web throughout 2006. It should miss some websites (I’m sure it does), so please add more if you think they should be on the list.

We’ll begin with those popular sites.

1. Best online video sharing
youtube
Everyone knows the King of Online video sharing already. I vote for YouTube and I guess you all agree.

2. Best online search engine

google

“How could we live without Google?” – “Honestly, I don’t know” . Google has been my best friend during those years, not only 2006. Untill now, no one can beat Google yet. Although you may want to read this article about “The End of Google” claimed that Jimmy Wales (Wikipedia founder) is set to launch a rival search engine early next year. Its name “Wikiasari” sounds cool

3. Best online encyclopedia
wiki
With more than 1M free English articles and counting, Wikipedia has been the largest online reference website for more than 5 years. The best thing in Wiki is everyone can contribute to it, anyone on Earth could become a Wikipedian.

4. Best online photo sharing
flickr
Yes, I do love Flickr – the best online photo management and sharing application in the world. And also I love the Flickr toys. There’s a lot of things we can do with our photos, more than we probably think of

5. Best online artistic community
deviantArt
I pick deviantArt as the best artistic community on the web, and I believe that anyone has visited deviantArt would do the same thing. First launched on 2000, deviantArt now grows at a rate of 40,000 submissions per day, maintaining its goal “where ART meets application!”.

6. Best web browser tool
firefox
The best Web browser on Earth is getting faster, more secure, and totally customizable to your online life. I’m talking about FireFox – the free, cross-platform browser tool to help you enjoy the Net with its advanced features like tabs browsing, plugins support, restore sessions, auto-update…

7. Best online music store
itunes
Open 24/7, the online iTunes Store features more than 3.5 million 99¢ songs, 65,000 free podcasts, 20,000 audiobooks, 200 TV shows, and now, movies and iPod games. Besides the great content available at affordable prices, the magic success of Apple iTunes Store also replies on their phenomenal products namely the iPod and other Apple computers.

8. Best weblogs community
9rules
It’s not easy to point out which one is the best weblogs community and base on what criteria; but when the time comes, you need to pick one. Personally, I picked 9rules network. 9rules is a community of the best weblogs in the world on a variety of topics; all the blogs listed in 9rules are very well-written content and are hand-picked up amongst thousand sites submitted. If you have other cool weblogs community, please share them here.

9. Best hardware site
hardware
Like category 8, category 9 has so many cool hardware sites, and each of them has its own competitive advantages. I voted for Tom’s Hardware Guide as one of the best hardware-related website with its premiere resource for hardware news as well as the reviews and detailed comparisons.

10. Best news site
googlenews
Where do you usually visit for reading news? I’m impressed by Google News with their capabilities of aggregating headlines from more than 4,500 English-language news sources worldwide, and then grouping similar stories together to displays them according to each reader’s personalized interests. Other famous sites could be listed here like: CNN, Reuters, BBC, Yahoo News, …; but for me, Google News rules
