I will go back to Vietnam next week for Lunar New Year 2007, so I pushed myself a bit harder last week trying to watch almost all movies I’ve got
My post this time should briefly review most of them and no spoils.
1. Confession of Pain (2006)
The story is typical, and you can even tell the whole story after the first 15 minutes. But then, “Confession of Pain” with its Cause n’ Effect style still keeps you watching till the end. And you will probably find it’s painful just like me. There’s some pains that cannot be cured easily.

It’s an action and humurous movie as far as I can tell. The North and South Korean soldiers, while “playing” with a nuclear bomb, were suddenly brought back in time to the sixteenth century. And they met their Korean ancestors there; one of them was Yi Sunsin, later became the greatest naval leader of Korean history. The movie can help you to know more about the glory days many centuries ago during the Japanese invansions of Korea (1592-159Pan’s Labyrinth can be seen as the best Spanish movie in 2006. The movie is exhilirating and beautiful in every single scene. The visual effect is stunning, and the whole movie goes very smoothly to tell you about 2 different worlds: The Spanish Civil War in 1944 and the fantasy world of Pan’s Labyrinth. Trust me, it’s a masterpiece you don’t want to miss

4. Perfume: the story of a murderer (2006)
We are no longer in Spain, this time we are brought back to France, set in 18 century, and meet a young man name Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, “one of the most gifted and abominable personages in an era that knew no lack of gifted and abominable personages”. He was born with superior sense of smell and he spent his whole life tried to create the world’s finest perfume. But then his life turns dark when he wanted not only to find but to steal that beauty forever. There goes the story of a murderer who had killed 25 girls just to capture their scent. This movie is also amazingly beautiful but be aware of its violence, sexuality, and disturbing images.
5. The Great Raid (2005)
I wanted to see this movie for quite a long time, but I don’t know what hinder me. Anyway, thanks to the “delay”, last week I could watch three war movies at once
This experience is unforgettable.

“The Great Raid” based on a true story about the liberation of the Cabanatuan Prison Camp in Jan 1945. At that time, World War II was going to its end. American soldiers, together with Filipinos allied, fight Japanese for freedom and then rescue another 500 American Prisioner of War (POWs) held in Cabanatuan (Phillipines). This mission is later considered as the most daring rescue mission of America during WWII. It’s a must see movie for people who like to know more about WWII. If I remmember correctly, “Commandos II – Beyond the call of duty” has one rescue mission is similar to this movie
6. Flags of our fathers (2006)
Directed by Clint Eastwood, “Flags of our Fathers” portraits a historical event of 6 Marines raising the flag in the Battle of Iwo Jima – a turning point for WWII. Their photo later became an symbol of American heroism; but how many people really understood what it represented, and knew who the men in the photo were. The story also told us about how the three surviving flag-raisers were used as propaganda tools by the United States government to lift the morale of the American people; and how they suffered from memories of the war for the rest of their lives. Having said that, I let you guys watch it and draw conclusions yourself; for me, I found this movie is very impressive depiction of war and worth watching.

The only heroes were the ones who didn’t come back.
7. Letters from Iwo Jima (2006)
As a complementary film to “Flags of Our Fathers” which depicts the same battle from the American viewpoint, “Letters from Iwo Jima” was released 2 months after, also directed by Clint Eastwood, to tell the story of the Battle of Iwo Jima from the perspective of Japanese soldiers.

This movie’s even better than “Flags of our fathers” reflecting what it would be from “the other side”. I took my hat off to thank Eastwood for his war films, such an outstanding and brilliant anti-war films indeed
Well, 7 movies for 7 days, it should be more than enough for now. Enjoy and share your feeling here.
