Upcoming movies for Christmas 09

Christmas is all around us and one of favorite activities is to gather in front of big screen to savoir the digital beauty, that is to say ‘movies’ in short. For the upcoming weeks, there will be boom and wow in cinemas worldwide with following movies debut: Avatar, Sherlock Holmes, Bodyguards and Assassins, The Storm Warriors II

1. Avatar (2009):

It is said to believe that ‘Avatar’ is one of the best 3D movie of this year. And undoubtedly, one will confirm after watching it ‘Avatar’ is a work done with extraordinary skill; especially a supreme intellectual or artistic achievement. Thanks to James Cameron, father of Terminator series and blockbuster Titanic, audience’s 3D experience is now up to a highest level, ever!

Avatar is the story of a disabled ex-Marine Jake Sully who is recruited to aid a mining expedition on the distant jungle moon of Pandora as only his DNA will bond with the alien hybrid body, known as an Avatar, that allows humans to breathe the toxic air. With orders to infiltrate the Na’vi, Jake finds himself falling in love with native girl, Neytiri, and complications soon ensue …

Employed the new CGI technologies, Avatar transforms the environments and characters into photorealistic 3D imagery that will transport the audience into the alien world rich with imaginative vistas, creatures and characters. You will again find the thrills like watching Matrix or Lord of the Rings Trilogy before, and this time it’s a real deal

I should not telling you that, but if you are looking for a treat for weekend in a spectacular world beyond imagination, that is it ^^

2. Sherlock Holmes (2009):

Everyone loves the greatest detective of all times – Sherlock Holmes This year, director Guy Ritchie portraits the legendary detective in a whole new story with tag line Nothing Escapes Him: detective Sherlock Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson this time will engage in a battle of wits and brawn with a nemesis whose plot is a threat to all of England.

Robert Downey brings the beloved Holmes to life as he has never been portrayed before. Jude Law stars as Holmes’ trusted colleague, Watson, a doctor and war veteran who is a formidable ally for Sherlock Holmes. Rachel McAdams stars as Irene Adler, the only woman ever to have bested Holmes and who has maintained a tempestuous relationship with the detective. Mark Strong stars as their mysterious new adversary, Blackwood. Kelly Reilly will play Watson’s love interest, Mary.

Sherlock Holmes is releasing by Christmas Eve this year, probably not the best time but who knows, Jude Law and Robert Downey are attractive enough to beat the cold weather

3. Bodyguards and Assassins (2009):

Surprisingly enough, I always found Asia movies during holiday season are better than its Hollywood counterpart, despite the count on ticket sales Bodyguards and Assassins, which is hoped to be another hit like IP Man (Diệp Vấn), is a Chinese action/drama film featuring an all-star cast including Donnie Yen, Leon Lai, Tony Leung, and Fan Bingbing.

The film tells the story of a group of bodyguards protecting Sun Yat Sen – Tôn Trung Sơn from assassins in 1905. In the distance of thirteen blocks, the one man who holds a nations fate must survive relentless attempts on his life with only five bodyguards to protect him. Against hundreds of assassins, these men must put their courage to the test in order to protect the hopes of millions in this perilous night even if it means fighting to the death

The film is more of a political drama than is perhaps hinted at in the film’s marketing, but an engrossing and highly effective one. The context of this turbulent and volatile period of Chinese history is carefully executed and the director (Teddy Chen) ensures the drama is always placed ahead of any particular political agenda Movie goers will also enjoy the scenes of Hong Kong during 1905, which is fantastically re-created on screen, thanks to a combination of vast outdoor sets seamlessly complimented by CGI landscapes. Bodyguards and Assassins is already on air in Malaysia and Singapore this week and in Cantonese.

4. The Storm Warriors (2009):

Aka Fung wan II or The Storm Riders 2, The Storm Warriors would finally come to screen after 10 years from its first movie Storm Riders.

Japanese evil warlord Lord Godless desired to conquer China. He imprisoned a large number of martial artists and tried to make them subjugate. Among the prisoners were Cloud and the martial arts elder statesman Nameless. Wind came to the rescue. The trio was badly wounded by Lord Godless’s evil martial arts attack. The remaining martial artists sacrificed their lives to save the trio, in the hope that the trio would beat Lord Godless one day and save the country … If you read Fung Wan (Phong Vân) comics by Ma Wing Shing (Mã Vinh Thành), you probably knew the rest. If you don’t, then try out the movie

Words that best summarize ‘The Storm Warriors’ are: Loads of CGIs, exceptionally good effects, plenty of slow-mo fight scenes and little emotional scenes, worth-mentioned actors Aaron Kwok and Ekin Cheng, and can be improved! Truly, one should not expect too much on story line and plots
